Chartered Accountants Charged to Adopt Innovative Mindset.

Chartered Accountants have been charged to adopt a digital and experimental mindset, learn and re-learn, as well as focus on the future and recognize that innovation is the new norm.

Mr. Jamiu Olakisan, a Member of the Council of the Institute who gave the charge in the lead paper at the 14th Western Districts Accountants’ Conference in Ilaro, Ogun State in his paper titled Technological Trends and Global Accounting Practice said innovative mindset would help accountants remain relevant in the global technological era.

In his key note address at the conference which ran from February 3 to 6, 2020, ICAN President Mazi Nnamdi Okwuadigbo, FCA said Chartered Accountants are no longer appendages to businesses, but full partners in the creation of value for clients and stakeholders. According to him: “days have passed when accountants were considered as mere number crunchers with no contributions to the charting of strategic directions for enterprises”.

He told the gathering that “today’s accountants are pivotal to the formulation and implementation of workable business policies, pointing out that they were not expected again to “occupy the back office, but to become prominent players in the field of commerce, trade and industry”.

He however pointed out that accountants would require regular reorientation and refining of knowledge of the profession for them to properly discharge their duty. The President pledged that ICAN would not rest on its oars at building capacity for the economy and asserted that the Institute would sustain its position as “the foremost accounting body in the country and continue to be creative in the bridging of the skill gap in the accounting sector”.
