The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Emmanuel Udom, FCA has commended ICAN for imparting sound professional training to its members and sustaining an enviable standard over the years.
He pledged to keep to the values of ICAN in public sector, pointing out that the solution of the nation’s problems could be provided by accountants.
The governor who spoke when an ICAN team paid him a courtesy visit at the Akwa Ibom State Government House, Uyo said the State was ready to partner the Institute in capacity building for its members of Staff including accountants, auditors and tax practitioners to enhance efficiency in the State’s Public Service, pointing out that professionalism would help fix the country.
Earlier in his speech ICAN President Mazi Okwuadigbo, FCA informed the governor that data gathering for the ICAN Accountability Index (ICAN AI) report was in top gear and called on him to be a lead advocate of the project in the state and to direct the state’s ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to allow the project’s assessors and coordinators access to the data that would enable them prepare their report.
Speaking through a Past President of the Institute Mr. Emmanuel Ijewere, FCA the President explained that the ICAN AI was part of the Institute’s strategies to promote best practices in Public Financial Management, noting that its thrusts was to drive efficiency in resource utilization in the public sector, eliminate wastes and sharp practices as well as promote transparency in public governance across the three tiers of government. He revealed that the second report of the index would be different from the first as it would cover local government and local council areas in addition to the Federal and State Governments.
