Military Pensions Board Chairman Bags International Free Media Organization Special Recognition Award

The Chairman Military Pensions Board (MPB), Commodore SA Lawal, has bagged the International Free Media Organization (IFMO) Special Recognition Award for his priceless contributions towards Nation building and entrenchment of sustainable reforms at the Military Pensions Board.

Speaking during the Award presentation, which was held on 14 April 2021 at the Headquarters of MPB in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the IFMO, Mr Ohis Malik Airende, noted that the pragmatic leadership style of Commodore Lawal has endeared him to the IFMO and has spurred the organization to specially reward him as one of the inspirational leaders of this generation.

According to Mr Ohis Malik, Commodore Lawal’s tenacity to uphold transparency and accountability, in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration, as the bedrock of good governance cannot be overlooked. Your nomination for this special recognition was as a result of extraordinary feats, courage, exemplary leadership, loyalty as well as uncommon commitment to prompt payment of pensions, gratuity and death benefits, he added.

In his remarks, the Chairman MPB thanked the Group for recognizing his painstaking efforts toward improving service delivery in the MPB since he assumed office in September 2021. He noted that indeed, several reforms have been emplaced to sustain prompt payment of all entitlements of military retirees or their Next-of-Kins (NOKs) in a transparent and accountable manner.

He noted that the Board has been able to uphold the principles of fairness and service to humanity in the discharge of its mandate. Commodore Lawal further noted that the Board has continually ensured that the payment of monthly pensions to military pensioners is completed before the end of every month, even before serving members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria are paid their monthly salary.

Speaking further, the Chairman MPB disclosed that the Board has computerized and re-organized gratuity and pension payment system to eliminate unnecessary delays. According to him, death benefits of deceased personnel, gratuities and pension arrears of retirees, whose records were forwarded to MPB by respective Service Headquarters and whose biometrics were captured at the Board in the First Quarter of 2021 (January to March), have all been paid.

The Chairman added that in an effort to entrench a stress-free and seamless verification exercise of military pensioners in Nigeria and those in the Diaspora, the MPB has obtained approval to conduct an electronic verification exercise. It is believed that the proposed electronic verification exercise would eliminate the hardship and stress associated with the previous system of manual/physical verification exercise, he added.
