PenCom vs PensionNigeria Report on Return on Investment for all PFAs in Nigeria

PensionNigeria has being tracking the performance of all Funds being managed by all Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) in Nigeria and we have been doing this since 2017. National Pension Commission (PenCom) for the first time since inception of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in 2004, released PFAs’ performance in December 2020, and we decided to compare our report with PenCom’s report.
We believe tracking the performance of these Funds is not only about changing PFAs which started in November 2020 but also about creating awareness on monitoring your Retirement Savings Account (RSA) and being informed about opportunities for better ROI if you change Funds within the same PFA, which started in July 2018 via the Multifund Structure.

The data used for our reports for the Performance of all PFAs in Nigeria, is sourced directed from the PFAs. Even though some of the data are from the unaudited reports of the PFAs, for us as analysts, any PFA with unaudited ROI which is materially different from its audited ROI is a BIG RED FLAG.
National Pension Commission (PenCom) for the first time since inception of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) in 2004, released the Return on Investment (ROI) for the pension funds being managed by Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs), in December 2020. PenCom released the annualized ROI for Retirement Savings Account (RSA) Fund 1 & 3 for 2018 & 2019 and the actual ROI for RSA Fund 2 & 4 for 2016 to 2019. You can check out the full report here PenCom for the first time releases, RSA Fund 1 (2018-19), Fund 2 (2016-19), Fund 3 (2018-19), & Fund 4 (2016-19), Return on Investment (ROI) for all PFAs in Nigeria.
The comparison of our report and PenCom report was only done for Fund 2 & 4 because the report PenCom released for Fund 1 & 3 is annualized while our report for Fund 1 & 3 is actual. We compared the PenCom report with our report for RSA Fund 2 & 4 for 2017, 2018 and 2019, and we discovered that only one PFA had a difference greater than +/-1%, few PFAs had a difference between less than +/-1% and +/-0.1% while most PFAs had no difference at all or a difference of less than +/-0.1%.

In conclusion, to a large extent, we are confident that our reports reflects the performance of the Funds being managed by the PFAs and we are also certain that the publication of our reports will push PFAs to ensure that their records are managed more effectively to ensure that the difference between unaudited and audited ROI is reduced to the minimum or eliminated completely. Any PFA with unaudited ROI which is materially different from its audited ROI is a BIG RED FLAG.
