Rivers State Pensioners Cancel Pensioners Day Celebration

Nigeria union of Pensioners in Rivers State has disclosed that it will not celebrate this years pensioners day in sympathy to the over 3000 Pensioners in the state who are yet to be paid their pensions and Gratuities after serving the state meritoriously for 35 years.

A Statement jointly signed by the Nigeria union of Pensioners, Rivers State chapter Chairman and Secretary, Comrade Collins Nwankwo and Joseph Agbo says their is nothing to celebrate as pensioners in the state are passing through untold hardship due to the inability of the state government to pay retired pensioners their Initial pension allowance, gratuities and harmonize pension, so that pensioners who still receive as low as N2000 monthly pension can be ungraded to their colleagues who receive N10,000 and above.

The pensioners also disclosed that they recently concluded their South South zonal meeting about a week ago which drained their resources and they are also unable to meet up with the stress of trying to put together a colorful event for pensioners to come out and celebrate.

The Union called on pensioners to use the occasion for sober reflections and call on God in prayers to change their situation into positive result with the believe that “What They Cannot Get Today They Will Get Tomorrow” so that God can keep them strong, safe and alive to witness the positive development that next year will usher in.
