Adamawa Raises Minimum Pension to ₦50,000 in Major Relief for Retirees

The Adamawa State Government has approved a new minimum monthly pension of ₦50,000 for retired civil servants, marking one of the state’s most significant pension reforms in recent years.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced the decision during a live appearance on the Taba Kidi Taba Karatu programme aired on the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in Yola. According to the governor, the new minimum pension will take effect from August 2026, ensuring that no retired civil servant in the state receives less than ₦50,000 monthly.

Ending Years of Low Pension Payments

Governor Fintiri described the previous pension structure as inadequate and unfair to retirees who had dedicated decades of service to the state. He noted that some pensioners had been surviving on extremely low monthly payments, with reports indicating that many earned between ₦4,000 and ₦10,000 for years. He said the review reflects his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners and ensuring they enjoy a more dignified retirement. “The adjustment is a reflection of our appreciation for the years of dedicated service rendered by our pensioners,” the governor stated.

Relief Amid Rising Cost of Living

The pension increase comes at a time when inflation and the rising cost of living continue to place financial pressure on retirees across Nigeria. By setting a new minimum pension of ₦50,000, the Adamawa Government aims to provide greater financial security for retired workers, many of whom have long advocated for an upward review of pension payments. The state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners had previously highlighted that the minimum pension had remained unchanged for over two decades, making the latest review a significant milestone.

What the Decision Means

The new minimum pension is expected to:

Improve the standard of living for thousands of retired civil servants.
Reduce the financial hardship faced by elderly pensioners.
Restore confidence in the state’s pension system.
Demonstrate the government’s commitment to rewarding years of public service.

For many retirees, the increase represents long-awaited recognition after years of receiving pensions that had become insufficient to meet basic living expenses.
