Nigerian Police Confirm New 100% Exit Benefit Scheme for Retiring Officers

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the implementation of a new Exit Benefit Scheme (EBS) that will provide eligible retiring officers and other treasury-funded public servants with a lump-sum payment equal to 100% of their final total annual emoluments upon retirement.

The confirmation follows an official police wireless message circulated to commands nationwide after the Federal Government approved the scheme in line with the provisions of Section 4(4A) of the Pension Reform Act 2014.

What Is the New Exit Benefit Scheme?

The Exit Benefit Scheme is a retirement package designed to strengthen financial security for public servants who have dedicated years of service to the Federal Government. Under the new arrangement, eligible employees of treasury-funded Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), including the Nigeria Police Force, will receive a one-time exit benefit equivalent to their final total annual emoluments in addition to their existing pension arrangements. The scheme officially takes effect from January 1, 2026.

Who Qualifies?

According to the police directive, officers must meet the following conditions:

Be employed by a treasury-funded Ministry, Department or Agency.
Have completed at least 10 years of service before retirement.
Retire on or after January 1, 2026.

The National Pension Commission is currently upgrading its Contribution and Bond Redemption Application (COBRA) platform to include a dedicated Exit Benefit Scheme module. This upgrade is expected to streamline processing and payment of the new retirement benefit.

What the Scheme Means for Police Officers

For many officers, the new Exit Benefit Scheme represents one of the most significant improvements to retirement welfare in recent years. The payment of a lump sum equivalent to an officer’s final annual earnings is expected to provide additional financial support during the transition from active service into retirement. The initiative also aligns with broader Federal Government efforts to improve the welfare of public servants while maintaining the existing Contributory Pension Scheme framework.
