Senate Assures Police of Exit from Contributory Pension Scheme

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has given a major assurance to retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) who had been protesting their continued inclusion in the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). According to the Senate President, lawmakers will move swiftly to align with the already passed bill by the House of Representatives and formally remove police personnel from the scheme.
Update on Police Exist from CPS
Senate Assurance: Senate President Godswill Akpabio met with protesting police retirees on Thursday 27 November 2025 and assured them that the Senate would “immediately align” with the House of Representatives to pass the necessary legislation. He explicitly stated the problem was “over as far as the law is concerned” and that the Senate would concur with the House Tuesday next week.
House of Reps Already Passed Bill: The House of Representatives passed the bill to establish the NPF Pension Board and remove police personnel from the CPS in October 2025.
Presidential Assent: Once the Senate passes its version of the bill and the two chambers harmonize, the final bill will be sent to President Bola Tinubu for his assent to become law.
Rationale: The move is in response to years of protests by police retirees who argue that the current CPS is not as rewarding as the old defined-benefit pension system, which other security agencies like the Military and intelligence services already benefit from.
