ICAN President Message on #EndSARS Protests & Lekki Toll Gate Shootings

The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has released a statement on the #EndSARS Protests and the recent and sad Lekki Toll Gate Shootings. Below is the statement;

Dear Member

This is no doubt a defining moment in the history of our great nation, Nigeria. It is rather unfortunate that what started as peaceful and laudable protests by our courageous youths, snowballed to a bloody event receiving condemnation from all quarters, locally and internationally.

As a concerned Institute, our hearts and prayers are with the families of the gallant youths and others who lost their lives in the mindless shooting of innocent citizens. We also pray for the repose of the dead and quick recovery for those who sustained varying degrees of injuries.

At ICAN, we condemn the killing in its totality as it is a total disregard for the rights of citizens to peaceful protests. We are hopeful that all who were involved in such a dastardly act would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

While we expect government to live up to its responsibility of protecting her citizens, we encourage all Nigerians to keep faith alive in this joint struggle of building a nation we can truly call our own.

To the Institute’s over 50,000 professionals members, 25,000 Accounting Technicians and 350,000 students, I appeal to us to remain law abiding, as ever, even as we continue to fight for our rights as citizens of this great nation. We must bring to bear our enduring legacy of Accuracy and Integrity as we work together with other professionals to restore justice and equity in the country.

Once again, we empathize with the families of those who have paid the supreme price. We know they have written their names in gold in the annals of this country and their sacrifice would not go in vain.

Please remain calm and remain safe.

God bless The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria

God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
