House of Reps Vote Against Life Pension for National Assembly Presiding Officers

The House of Representatives has voted against Bill 16 which proposed life pension for presiding officers of the National Assembly, in the ongoing amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

The proposal wanted to grant Life Pension to presiding officers of the National Assembly, including the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives as well as their deputies, via amendment of the 1999 Constitution.

The Bill 16 reads, “That the House does receive the report of the Special Ad-hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution on a Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to Provide Pension for Presiding Officers of the National Assembly; and for Related Matters.”

The communication released by the House of Reps reads;

A Bill for An Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide pension for Presiding Officers of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly; and for related matters.

Nays have it.

The communication released by The Nigerian Senate reads;

16. A Bill for An Act to alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to provide pension for Presiding Officers of the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly; and for related matters.
