MPB to Prioritize Welfare of Military Pensioners, Reflect Minimum Wage in Pension & Electronic Verification

Military Pensions Board (MPB) has promised to sustain prioritizing the welfare needs of all military pensioners in the country. This was disclosed on 18 November 2020, by the Chairman of the Board, Commodore Abayomi Lawal, when he played host to the National Executives of the Nigerian Legion in his office in Abuja where he was decorated with the 2021-Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem.

He assured that the Board will continue to prioritize prompt payment of monthly pensions as government continues to release funds on time. According to him, “money for pensions are released monthly and once we receive the money, we will ensure prompt payment before the end of every month”. He added that the Board would continue to liaise with relevant government agencies to ensure that the new minimum wage is reflected in the pensions of all military retirees as soon as possible.

Speaking further, Commodore Lawal also noted that the Board will soon commence electronic verification of military pensioners in Nigeria and in the diaspora. He assured retirees that all arrangements for the verification has been completed and the Board will announce a date for the commencement of the exercise as soon as the process is approved by the Defence Headquarters.

The Chairman explained further that under the proposed electronic verification, pensioners will not go through the ordeal of travelling from their respective villages or communities to state capitals. “They will only have to visit any of the accredited banks with their BVN and be screened”, he added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Brigadier General Adakole Jones Akpa (rtd), lauded the Board for the new innovations introduced in the payment of pensions of retired Military men, adding that the era of collapsing while waiting to be paid is gone for good. He therefore charged the Board to sustain the feat and ensure that the welfare of the retired Military men remain a priority.

In his words, “we have observed that Military retirees are paid as at when due, the era when retired military men die or collapse while waiting to be paid is gone. I want to commend the Military Pension Board for doing a great job”.
