Niger State Pensioners Protest for the 3rd time in two months
Niger state pensioners on Monday blocked the entrance gate of government house, Minna to protest, for the third time in two months, their unpaid pension and gratuity, spanning over five years.
The Pensioners, who mostly retired from the local government service in the last six years, occupied the gate of the government house as early as around 7:00am. The protesting pensioners prevented newly elected local government Chairmen from entering the government house for their inauguration.
It is estimated that the State government is owing the pensioners about N14 billion but the state government in September 2022 approved N1 billion out of the pension liability for the payment of pension and gratuity to retirees in the state.
The pensioners who came to the government house gate with their mats, pillows, buckets and other personal belongings to occupy the gate, said they will not leave until their pensions are paid.
